Chinese Elm
The Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is a medium-sized deciduous tree known for its versatility and adaptability. It typically reaches a height of 40 to 50 feet with a spread of 30 to 40 feet. The tree has a rounded crown with a pleasing, vase-shaped growth habit. The leaves of the Chinese Elm are small, oval-shaped, and glossy green, turning shades of yellow, orange, or reddish-purple in the fall. In late summer to early fall, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers that give way to small, winged seeds. One of the notable features of the Chinese Elm is its ability to tolerate a wide range of growing conditions, including urban environments, poor soil, and drought. It is also resistant to Dutch elm disease, a destructive fungal disease that affects many other elm species. The Chinese Elm prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil but can adapt to different soil types, including clay and sandy soils. It is often used as a shade tree in residential yards, parks, and along streets due to its attractive form and ability to withstand various environmental stressors. The Chinese Elm's durability, adaptability, and beautiful foliage make it a popular choice for landscaping projects.
