Amelanchier arborea
Amelanchier arborea, commonly known as the downy serviceberry or Juneberry, is a small deciduous tree or large multi-stemmed shrub native to eastern North America. It typically grows up to 20-25 feet tall with a spread of 15-20 feet. The tree has a rounded crown with a dense, twiggy habit and attractive white flowers that bloom in early spring, followed by edible blue-black berries that ripen in early summer. The leaves are a dark green color in the summer and turn to shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. Downy serviceberry prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types and is tolerant of urban pollution, making it a great choice for city landscapes. The tree is also popular among wildlife, providing food and shelter for birds and other animals. Overall, Amelanchier arborea is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance, ornamental tree that provides year-round interest and benefits to wildlife.
