Dwarf Trident Maple
Acer buergerianum 'Miyasama yatsubusa' is a cultivar of the trident maple (Acer buergerianum). It's valued for its small size, compact growth habit, and attractive foliage. It is a slow-growing tree that reaches a height of only 3-6 feet and a spread of 3-5 feet over many years. It's a hardy tree that can tolerate a range of growing conditions, including full sun to partial shade and a variety of soil types. Leaves are small and three-lobed, measuring only about 1 inch in length and width. They emerge in the spring as a bright green color and gradually darken to a deep green as the summer progresses. In the fall, the leaves turn a rich shade of red, orange, or yellow, depending on the climate. The bark is attractive and peels to reveal a range of colors, including gray, brown, and orange. Small, winged seeds are dispersed by the wind. A popular choice for bonsai cultivation due to its small size, attractive foliage, and ability to develop fine branches. Often used in formal bonsai styles, such as the formal upright or slanting styles, as well as in informal styles like the cascade or semi-cascade.
