Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum
Acer palmatum, commonly known as Japanese maple, is a deciduous tree native to Japan, Korea, and China. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks throughout the world. The leaves of the Japanese maple are usually palmate with five to nine pointed lobes, but can also have a lace-like appearance. The leaves vary in color from green to deep red or purple, depending on the cultivar and the season. In the fall, the foliage of Japanese maples can turn a brilliant shade of red, orange, or yellow. The bark of the Japanese maple is typically smooth and gray, but can also have a rough texture with deep furrows in older specimens. The tree produces small red or purple flowers in the spring, which are followed by winged samaras, or "helicopter seeds," in the fall.
