Japanese Fir
Abies firma, also known as the Japanese fir or Momi fir, is a tall evergreen coniferous tree that is native to Japan. It can reach heights of 100 to 130 feet in its natural habitat, but usually grows to about 50 to 70 feet tall when cultivated in gardens. The tree has a narrow, conical shape and a dense crown of dark green needles that are about 1 inch long. The needles are arranged in a spiral pattern on the twigs and have two white stripes on the undersides. The bark of the tree is grayish-brown and smooth when young, becoming rough and fissured with age. The cones are upright, cylindrical, and about 6 inches long, with green or purple scales that turn brown when mature. The cones disintegrate and release their seeds in the fall. Abies firma is a popular ornamental tree in parks and large gardens.
