Longwood Gold Holly
The Longwood Gold Holly (Ilex x attenuata 'Longwood Gold') is a striking evergreen shrub that belongs to the Ilex genus. It is a hybrid cultivar, combining the features of different holly species. The Longwood Gold Holly typically grows to a height of 10 to 15 feet with a spread of 6 to 8 feet, forming an upright and dense shape. It features glossy, leathery leaves that are a vibrant golden-yellow color, adding a bright and cheerful element to the landscape. This holly cultivar is known for its excellent color retention throughout the year, maintaining its golden hue even during winter. Inconspicuous white flowers bloom in spring, followed by small black berries that provide food for birds. The Longwood Gold Holly is adaptable to a variety of soil types and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, although it may benefit from some protection against harsh afternoon sun in hotter regions. This holly cultivar is relatively low-maintenance once established and is commonly used as a specimen plant, accent shrub, or hedge in gardens and landscapes. Its golden foliage creates a focal point in the garden, adds a touch of brightness to mixed borders, and complements other plants with contrasting foliage colors. The Longwood Gold Holly is also suitable for container gardening and can be shaped or pruned to maintain a desired size or form.
